Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) Sensors

Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) Sensor

EGT sensors monitor the exhaust gas temperature of an internal combustion engine. Once measured, the temperature is communicated to the engine in order to control internal engine conditions, resulting in cleaner emissions, increased fuel efficiency, and protection against excessive heat damage or catalyst deterioration. Monitoring can be done across the whole engine unit, or cylinder by cylinder. Consistent monitoring enables the system to establish average temperatures, anticipate fluctuations, and notify you of any spikes. Both temperature and pressure can be sensed by one EGT unit, and additional customizations are optional.

Because EGT sensors are located in very hot areas of the engine, cables used during installation need to be able to withstand the extremes. We would suggest our metal-sheathed, mineral-insulated thermocouple conductors.

Types of EGT Sensors

Two main types are common: Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) and Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC). As the name suggests, in PTC sensors, resistance increases with rising temperature, while the opposite is true for NTC sensors. NTC sensors can be more accurate in certain applications, and the general measurement range for EGT sensors is -40 to 1000 degrees Celsius.

RAM's processing technique ensures heat and vibration resistance, and a compact, specific shape. These factors ensure high responsiveness and accurate detection. Types can vary by responsiveness and by range of temperature detection. EGT sensors are hermetically sealed and connected to a flexible cable assembly — multiple sensors can be employed in a single application.
